Discover The Town
Omu-Aran was founded over 500 years ago. The community was founded due to the migration of people from Ile-Ife. There was a drought in Ile-Ife. To know the cause of the drought, the oracle was consulted. The oracle said Ife was over-crowded and therefore some people had to leave.

Our History
Omu-Aran, the head post of Igbomina Land, the erstwhile headquarter of Igbomina/Ekiti Division in the then West Central State now known as Kwara State and presently the headquarters of Irepodun LGA, is situated some eighty (80) kilometers south east of Ilorin the State capital and approximately on Latitude 8° 8″ north of the Equator and Longitude 5° 6″ east of the Greenwich Meridian. The town equally serves as the headquarters of the Kwara South Senatorial District consisting of seven LGAs comprising Ekiti, Ifelodun, Irepodun, Isin, Oke Ero, Offa and Oyun LGAs.
Omu-Aran is the most prominent town among the Igbomina settlements located in Kwara State. It is closely linked with other Igbomina communities in Osun State and many Ekiti and Moba towns in Ekiti State. This centrality had placed her at the heartland and also favoured her as the provincial headquarter of an ancient Confederacy known as the Iyangba Ologbomona Confederacy which thrived through the ages particularly in the 18th Century.
Omu-Aran, like most Yoruba towns is a conglomeration of mixed cultures in that it is a congregation of people from various places and backgrounds.
The origin of Omu-Aran is linked with the Great Dispersal from Ile-Ife. It was during one of the phases of this migration that a valiant prince and warrior, Olomu Aperan, led the Omu people out of Ife towards the end of the 12th Century. He had with him an aboriginal instrument called Ogbo and settled first at Omu Ijaregbe near present day Ilesha, Osun State. Olomu Aperan moved out of Ijaregbe and settled briefly at several places before he finally settled at Odo Omu not far from Olla where he passed on to the great beyond. His successors and subjects left the place due to scarcity of water and settled at the present site of Omu-Aran about the 15th Century.
The Aran group had their roots in Oyo and they, as well, had settled in many places before arriving at Igbo Odun not far from present day Arandun. The group, led by their leader, Oba Alaran Orii, joined the Omu group in 1794 during the reign of Oba Akolade Agboluaje Olomu Efon 1 (1792- 1801) and settled at Ile Aran.
Many more other people were drawn to the settlement in the course of time. These include Ijoko, Ora Ayoka, Raba, Okore, Imolekere, and a host of others.
All these groups were living together in harmony until the community was forced to move to Ajo during the Kiriji (Ekiti Parapo) War which caused a serious security threat to the community between 1877 and 1893. They were there till the end of the war and the group moved back to the present site in 1896.
The community experienced a conflict during the reigns of Oba Momolosho (1918) and Alaran Buoye who did not go to Aran-Orin to rule. As a result of the friction, part of Aran people had to leave Omu-Aran and settled at present day Arandun.
Omu-Aran can be classified comparatively as an urban settlement with an estimated population of about 90,000 inhabitants. It is the third most populous and most important settlement in Kwara State and second only to Ilorin in terms of land mass.
Omu-Aran is not lagging behind in terms of human resources. It has produced many eminent personalities like the first Minister of Police Affairs in the regime of Sir Abubakar Tarawa Balewa of the first republic, the first indigenous secondary school principal in the whole of the Northern Region also during the first republic, the first governor of Kwara State, a Military Governor of Bauchi State who later became the Military Administrator of Osun State, the first graduate of Mathematics in the whole of the then Northern Region, the first Agricultural Science graduate in the whole of the old Kwara State, founder of the Living Faith Church World wide (aka Winners’ Chapel), founder of New Testament Church, notable business magnates and a host of others.
Omu-Aran is equally an educational centre with numerous public and private secondary schools including a Federal Government Girls’ Secondary School, many study centres for obtaining the National Certificate in Education, a world renowned university – Landmark University and Moses Orimolade University which is nearing completion.
